Woman gives bir Rth in taxi outside GPHC

A young mother who was denied access to deliver her baby at a private hospital yesterday gave birth in a taxi outside the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporatio­n’s (GPHC) Accident and Emergency Unit.

Kherysha Pompey, called ‘Rita’, 21, of Lot 57, Craig Street, Campellvil­le, Georgetown, gave birth to her daughter, Kssaiya Pompey, at 10:57, in a hired car pound of the hospital Public Relations Off said. He told this ne the delivery was done of a hospital attendan of five doctors who successful­ly deliver weighing three kilog grammes.

the young mother went to a private institutio­n and was told that she was not ready to deliver the baby. However, the woman who was sure she was in labour, was assisted by her neighbour to board a hire car and journeyed to the GPHC. Upon arriving at the hospital she felt her water bag break. The woman alerted her neighbour and the driver.

Sophia Clarke, a female attendant who has only been in the profession for about five months, was at the gate and heard the commotion. She opened the car door and was able to assist the woman with her baby. In the meantime, Dr.

Balram Doodnauth and four other doctors arrived at the scene and were able to complete the delivery of the baby in the car.

According to the release, the woman and her baby were admitted to the maternity ward at the hospital. The new mother has expressed gratitude to Clarke and the team of doctors, the release said. Further, she is appreciati­ve that the hospital rendered assistance and was efficient. The hospital had said that it is happy to have been able to successful­ly deliver the baby just outside its compound.
