Performing arts community mourns passing of Ron Bobb-Semple
The performing arts community is grieving the passing of Guyanese actor and cultural icon Ron BobbSemple, who died on Thursday last.
Among his many accomplishments, Ron was known for his support of Marcus Garvey’s philosophies for 35 years which led to his educational presentation ‘The Spirit of Marcus Garvey’, and his most recent the role of Grandpa Nigel in the Netflix movie See You Yesterday.
Ron, who resided in Florida, was said to have contracted COVID-19 and died owing to complications of the disease.
There has been an outpouring of condolences from many who shared experiences with Ron at one time or another.
Executive Director of Artistes in Direct Support Desiree Edghill offered condolences on social media. “I still can’t believe it!! Rest in Peace Ron Bobb-Semple. Condolences to his family. COVID is real. Protect yourselves my Peeps,” she said.
Arrowhead singer Courtney Noel, who also appeared in See You Yesterday, reflected, “...Going in I knew that ‘Grandpa Nigel’ was waaay outta my reach but I gave it a shot anyway. When I received the news that I had gotten the ‘Kingsley’ role I expressed my gratitude and immediately asked who was playing ‘Grandpa Nigel’. ‘This wonderful gentleman in Florida…’ before the casting agent could finish her sentence I blurted out: ‘Ron BobbSemple!’ She said: ‘Yes, how did you know?’ I said there’s only one man I know who could rock that part! And - true to form - he did.”
As Grandpa Nigel, Ron played the grandfather of one of the teenagers in the lead roles who experimented with time travel in Grandpa Nigel’s
garage. The Golden Arrowhead was plastered outside of Grandpa Nigel’s house.
Wherever he went, Ron always about boasted his Guyanese heritage, many shared.
Pandama Retreat Co-owner Warren Douglas recalled that Ron was at a men’s gathering there some
time ago and it will never be the same.
The actor’s Facebook page saw other prominent individuals like Margaret Lawrence and Sonia Noel remembering his contributions in the performing arts and recalling him as a man who remained humble in spite of all he accomplished.
