Defending champs Bent Street advances

Defending champions Bent Street, Future Stars, Showstoppe­rs and Belfield Warriors all were win winners’ row Sunday as the Magnum Independen­ce Cup continued at the National Park Tarmac, Thomas Lands.

Bent Street, led by a hat-trick from Sheldon Forde in the 18th, 22nd, and 24th minute, brushed aside newcomer Vene Stars 7-3.

Forde was supported by Wayne Lawrence who bagged a double in the 10th and 19th minute.

Chipping in with conversion­s in the fourth and 16th minute were Pernell Schultz and Daniel Wilson.

Alberto Hernandez tallied a double in the 15th and 23rd minute while Jose Vasquez added a goal in the 10th minute for the losers.

Meanwhile, Future Stars overcame Agricola 5-3. Raushan Ritch was the main threat with a first-half double in the fourth and fifth minutes, while adequate support was provided by Keron Solomon compliment­s of a second-half brace in the 19th and 23rd minutes. Opening the scoring for the eventual winners, was Daniel Ross in the third minute.

For Agricola, the trio of Kevin Padmore, Collis Samuels, and Kacy John scored in the 15th, 20th, and 22nd minute, respective­ly.

In another fixture, Showstoppe­rs squeaked past Leopold Street 4-3. Experience­d campaigner Marvin Josiah netted in the ninth and 20th minute while Dexroy Adams and Luiroy Nievelder scored in the 19th and 24th minute respective­ly.

For the losers, rising star Derwin George fashioned a brace in the eighth and 16th minute while Samuel Hunte scored in the 23rd minute.

Similarly, Belfield Warriors edged Festival City 2-1 with Alden Lawrence and Colin Richmond scoring in the eighth and 27th minute respective­ly. For the losers, a 14th strike as recorded by Tavel December.

In other results, North East La Penitence and Tiger Bay contested a 1-1 stalemate, while Stabroek Ballers defeated Ansa McAl 2-0. The competitio­n resumes today at the same venue with the final round of group stage matches.

The winner of the tournament will collect the package of $700,000, and the championsh­ip trophy, while the runner-up will receive $400,000 and the correspond­ing accolade. The third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respective­ly.

The other sponsors of the event are MVP Sport, Nigel Hind Financial Services, Andrews Supermarke­t, Bold Expression­s Barbershop, Fireside Grill ‘N’ Chill, Star Party Rentals, and Lucozade.
