Sanmoogan, Hussain smash records at powerlifting c/ships
The fountain of youth was overflowing at St Stanislaus’ auditorium yesterday but a pair of vicenarians Wazeer Hussain and Sarah Sanmoogan stole the show at this year’s Masters and Intermediate Powerlifting Championships.
Sanmoogan, 20 and Hussain, 21 both debutants on the platform, lifted their way to the coveted best lifter female and male intermediate titles.
The pair displayed incredible feats of strength and chalked up several national record-breaking lifts en route to earning their glistening trophies.
Sanmoogan, who stated that she just started lifting last October, recorded the highest good lift points (73.42) of all the females competing and broke four records in her junior women’s division.
The Saiyan Fitness standout, lifting in the 69kg class, had a best squat of 122.5kg, a best bench of 62.5kg, a best deadlift of 155kg for a total of 340kg.
Her lifts and her total were all new national records. Sanmoogan had an exceptional day during her first competition.
Hussain was not to be outdone and he also rewrote the record books while recording the highest good lift points (79.45) of any male lifter.
The 83kg product of Roy’s Gym, squatted 197.5kg, benched 132.5kg and deadlifted 240kg for a total of 570kg .
The mammoth deadlift and total were new records in his men’s junior weight class.
Meanwhile, Lalita Bridgemohan (female), Nigel Phillips (equipped) and Marley Vyphius (classic) were the Masters best lifters in their respective categories.
Fitness Express, Banks DIH Limited, White Castle Fish Shop and Pele Alumni were among the proud sponsors for the fixture which attracted 24 athletes who broke a total of 22 national records. In an invited comment, president of the federation, Gordon Spencer deemed the event which welcomed back a live audience, a success.
