Jeffreys, Vieiras, Seejatan dominate finale

-

Powered by Torginol, Kristian Jeffrey painted the picture perfect ending, coming from behind to win the Radicals Caribbean Cup series on Sunday in the highlight of the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club’s (GMR&SC) International Race of Champions meet at the South Dakota Circuit.

Starting 15 points in the rear view of Trinidad’s Kristian Boodoosingh, Jeffrey needed things to steer in his favour and they did for the most part.

On the new rehabilitated and expanded 1.6- mile circuit, Boodoosingh piloted his machine to a third place finish in the first race but his effort was good enough to fend off the charge of Jeffrey who finished fourth.

However, luck was on Jeffrey’s side as he moved up to third in race two when Boodoosingh did not finish after spiraling off the track. Jeffrey finished third behind Sulieman Esuf (second) and Mark Maloney.

With the third place finish, Jeffrey closed the gap and narrowed Boodoosingh’s virtual lead to approximately three points and the winner of the Radicals would be decided in the final race.

In the highly anticipated finale at the over flowing venue, the speed demon Jeffrey drove like a man possessed and held off fierce competition from Jamaican Senna Summerbell and Boodoosingh.

Jeffrey held his nerve to keep the pair in his rearview and went on to happily wave the checkered flag at the end of the eight laps and secure the title.

After the race, the Torginol Paints Brand Ambassador expressed satisfaction with a job well done, noting it was hard work given the conditions but said that a supportive team got him over the line.

Back from a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the highly-anticipated, yearend

fixture, returned for a grand finale and the local daredevils did not disappoint.

Group Two ruler, Shan Seejatan, swept all three races in a dominant showing to once again lift the trophy for the category. Stefan Jeffrey mirrored Seejatan’s sweep in Group Three and he was awarded the trophy.

Due to the inclement weather, there was only one Superstock race which was won by Matthew Vieira. He was followed by Stephen Vieira and Hemanand Boodram.

Sunday’s event was the first meet held at the new track which was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the government, GMR&SC and other stakeholders .

His Excellency, President Irfaan Ali along with several ministers of the government visited the venue and interacted with the fans that attended.
