Former City Engineer Erskine dies after Mahaicony accident

Former City Engineer, Gregory Erskine died after he was involved in an accident on Saturday morning at about 7:15 on the Perseveran­ce Public Road, Mahaicony.

According to a police report, a car driven by Saramonie Ghansham, a 22-year-old, was proceeding west along the southern side of the road at a fast rate when she lost control of her vehicle, collided with the median and ended up on the northern side of the road. Her car then hit a motor lorry with trailer driven by Loris Barnes.

At the time of the accident the car had three other occupants, Marx Wilson, a 46-year-old Police Inspector; Okechukwu Geoffrey, a 42 year-old of Lot 52 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown; and Erskine, 45, of D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown.

Following the collision, Baynes lost control of his motor lorry, struck two utility poles and ended up in a concrete fence on the northern side of the road.

As a result of the collision, both drivers and the three occupants of the motor car suffered injuries about their bodies. They were all assisted out of their vehicles by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where they were seen and examined by a doctor on duty. Barnes and Geoffrey were treated and sent away, while Wilson and Erskine were transferre­d to Georgetown

Public Hospital.

Erskine suffered a fractured left arm and left leg and Wilson suffered a fractured left arm and was admitted as a patient in the male surgical ward. Ghansham later took selfdischa­rge from the Mahaicony Public Hospital and was later admitted as a patient at the Woodlands Hospital suffering from fractured ribs.

At about 2 pm on Saturday, Erskine succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting
