Penalty shootout wins for Blueberry Hill, One Mile

-

It was an evening of penalty shoot-out victories as Blueberry Hill and One Mile secured hardfought wins when the Region #10 zone in the One Guyana President’s Cup continued on Monday evening at the Wisburg ground.

Blueberry edged Block 22 by a 4-2 score-line on penalty kicks after regulation time ended 3-3. Midfielder Clive Nobrega opted to take the goalkeeping reins for Blueberry Hill and was immediately rewarded as he denied Block 22 in their first attempt to commence the penalty shoot-out.

Shane Luckie quickly capitalised as he fired his effort past the custodian to hand Blueberry Hill a 1-0 advantage. Nobrega was unable to repeat his previous feat as Block 22 converted to start the second round.

However, Blueberry Hill maintained their perfect record from the spot to retain their 2-1 advantage as Kendolph Lewis slammed his effort home. The score then progressed to 3-2 as both teams converted from the mark in the third round.

It then went from bad to worse for Block 22, as Nobrega fashioned another diving save in the fourth round, handing Blueberry Hill the perfect opportunity to win the matchup. Marley Major would then seal the result, slotting the ball past the Block 22 custodian.

Prior to the dramatic end, the Blueberry Hill outfit had raced to a 3-0 advantage. Nobrega, operating in his familiar defensive midfield role, opened the scoring in the 18th minute, uncorking a free-kick from the top of the box, which settled into the top left corner.

He would repeat this act in the 25th minute, this time hammering his free-kick from outside the penalty area, into the lower right corner.

Luckie, following the resumption of play in the second half, pushed the score to 3-0 in the 48th minute, cutting across the defender before rifling his effort into the far corner.

However, and in extraordinary circumstances, Block 22 would level proceedings via three goals in the space of 14 minutes. Mikel Jeffers commenced the comeback in the 56th minute as he slotted home from inside the penalty area.

Jeffers would make his presence felt once more in the 61st minute, sliding his effort into the right side after a flat cross into the box to reduce the score at 32.

The comeback was then completed in the 70th minute as Lenox Richards scored, uncorking a powerful shot from outside the 18 yard area which took a deflection and settled into the back of the net, in the process setting up the fixture’s eventual ending.

Meanwhile, One Mile overcame Central Amelia’s Ward 3-2 on penalty kicks, after regulation time concluded 1-1. Before the shoot-out, Ricardo Estwick handed Amelia’s Ward the lead in the 46th minute, while Denzil Fordyce equalised in the 86th minute.
