Guyana Women suffer nine-wicket loss in opening Super50 match
Guyana Women got off to a losing start in their Cricket West Indies Super50 campaign, going down by nine wickets to Windward Islands yesterday at the Conaree Sports Club ground.
Batting first, Guyana were routed for a paltry 79 in 27.1 overs before Windwards reached 80 for one in 21.2 overs.
Left-arm seamer, Qiana Joseph, was the architect of Guyana’s demise, taking 4-18 with support coming from veteran leg spinner, Afy Fletcher with 210.
Pearl Etienne and Nerissa Crafton took a wicket each. For Guyana, opener Realeanna Grimmond top scored with 20 from 39 balls, hitting three boundaries. Mandy Mangru was the only other batter to reach double figures with 18 before being trapped leg before wicket to Etienne. Extras contributed 15 towards Guyana’s total.
Despite Plaffina Millinton removing Malika Edward off the first ball of the innings, Fletcher showed her experience and piloted the chase with an unbeaten 44. The 36-year-old’s 52-ball innings featured six boundaries as she shared in an unbroken partnership of 79 with Namiah Marcellin who made 28 from 76 balls.
Meanwhile, Barbados Women cruised to a six-wicket win over Trinidad and Tobago Women at
Basseterre. A top score of 68 from Shunelle Sawh propelled Trinidad to 161 all out in 43.5 overs with Britney Cooper supporting with 32, the pair putting on 60 for the fourth wicket. Allison Gordon and Keila Elliott took four wickets each for 36 and 40 runs respectively.
The Knight twins, Kycia (37) and Kyshona (35) put on 74 for the second wicket to put Barbados in a strong position to win before Aaliyah Alleyne ensured victory with an unbeaten 48 from 51 balls. Her innings featured seven boundaries.
Guyana will now battle Barbados in round two of the tournament tournament.
