Where two worlds meet

-

The Colonial period in Honduras began with the discovery of “Isla de los Pinos” (now Guanaja) by admiral Cristóbal Colón on his fourth and final trip (1502) to the new continent.

The colonial period in Honduras lasted for more than 300 years, from the 1500s to the 1800s. Thanks to this, the daily life of the inhabitants who were already settled in Hoduran territory had to be adapted to the Spanish culture. Architecture, religion, politics, mining, language and even gastronomy are some of the most visible examples of Spanish influence in Honduras. At present, Honduras is considered the second country with the greatest tangible cultural heritage in all of Central America. The many churches, cathedrals, convents, haciendas, fortifications, streets and beautiful religious art, particularly in the center, South and West of the Honduran territory, make this five stars country a singular destination for history lovers. There are many Honduran cities that today treasure the architectural and cultural jewels provided by the Spanish colony. Comayagua, Tegucigalpa, Gracias and Santa Rosa de Copán for example still keep in their patron fairs and in their religious rites of Holy Week, very well-rooted traditions of the time. There are buildings that transport each of their visitors to those years, perfect example of this are the churches of San Manuel de Colohete and La Campa, singular works of art lost in time among the mountains.
