Tela was founded on May 3, 1524 with the name of “Triunfo de la Cruz by the Spanish conquistador Cristobal Olid. Just this date coincided with the celebration of the day of the cross by the Catholic faithful. Initially the name was quite accepted by its inhabitants, however after a certain time they began to feel that it was too extensive and they began to abbreviate it, first they used the name “T de la Cruz” and then in 1829 they decided to call it only Tela. Some of the Honduran historians consider that Tela’s name comes from the indigenous word “Tetela,” which could be translated as “abundance of hills.” Tela has a territorial extension of approximately 1,163.3 km² and a population of around 92,817 inhabitants. Its political division consists of 213 hamlets and 77 villages. Something very interesting and unique about Tela, is that it has the largest Garifuna population in the world, so the traditions are very well rooted throughout the city The Lancetilla River crosses the city, and divides it into Old Tela and New
Tela. The part known as Old Tela was the first part of the city to be inhabited, its architecture is defined as typical of banana times, the buildings were maid of wood . New Tela, however, is the part where modern architecture predominates, every building fallows the lines of new construction.
