The city that was once the first capital of Honduras is located in the heart of the American continent and in the center of the country. Comayagua is a magical city known for its colonial architectu­re. The city had much power over religion and politics during the colonial era and proof of this are its colonial squares and its imposing Cathedral located in the center of the city.

The church of the Immaculate Conception houses one of the oldest clocks in America and is one of the most visited churches in the country. The streets of Comayagua are still made from cobbleston­e and its architectu­re is filled with tile roofs,houses with long corridors and beautiful gardens. It was founded as Villa on December 8, 1537 by Captain Alonzo de Cáceres, on behalf of King of Spain Charles I. In 1543 King Felipe II ordered the Audiencia de los Confines to reside in the Villa de la Concepción de Comayagua, which gave it the name of Nueva Valladolid de Comayagua.

If you visit Comayagua, you cannot miss the Regional Museum of Comayagua where you can learn about the city´s history or the Museum of Religious Art where a rich collection of religious colonial art is displayed. This impressive city offers a vast selection of dishes, impressive art and an amazing culture.

If you are religious and want to marvel at some of the customs of the Catholic religion, Comayagua is the place to be. The patron saint’s fair of Comayagua is held in honor of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception in December. The traditions of the Catholic Church are practiced with great fervor, being the carpets one of the most traditiona­l artistic shows in Honduras during Easter. These carpets are made with multicolor­ed sawdust, which makes them one of the most incredible attraction­s in the city during summer time.
