In the mid-1990s, Ethan Hawke seemed destined to be the hipster heartthrob of his generation with films such as Reality Bites and Before Sunrise. While the blockbusters never really came calling, he’s remained one of Hollywood’s most reliable leading men, with an eclectic filmography that includes both independent and commercial films.
Hawke had a banner year in 2018. In addition to awards buzz for his performance in First Reformed, he also returned to the director’s chair with Blaze, a biopic about the late singer Blaze Foley. Like Hawke’s previous directorial effort,
Seymour: An Introduction, Blaze is about an unsung musical hero. Foley – real name Michael David Fuller – was a cult figure in the American country music circle, whose life was tragically cut short in 1989 at the age of 39. Dubbed ‘a genius and a beautiful loser’ by country singer Lucinda Williams, Foley was also haunted by his demons and the pressures of a burgeoning career.
Blaze is a fiercely unconventional biopic. Tinted in a golden brown hue, the nostalgic film is more concerned with capturing the way Foley lived rather than his actual life story. The narrative often stops to show Foley sharing tender moments with his muse, Sybil Rosen (who co-wrote the script), and shooting the breeze with his musician friends. Unfolding like memories coming to the surface, the film is a collage of moments revealed through multiple timelines with overlapping scenes. It’s a melancholic and quietly brilliant film that shows Hawke’s talent as a storyteller.
Hawke himself plays an elusive rocker in Juliet, Naked. Based on a Nick Hornby novel, the romantic comedy stars Hawke as Tucker Crowe, a musician who has amassed a small cult of obsessed fans since abruptly leaving the music world 25 years ago. When Annie (Rose Byrne), the long-suffering girlfriend of one of these fans, posts a negative review of a resurfaced demo album, Crowe reaches out to her via e-mail and the two develop an unusual friendship.
Living on the meagre royalties he earns from his forgotten music, Crowe is a man haunted by regrets, with little to show for his life apart from the five children he had with four different women.
As a former heartthrob himself, Hawke is a perfect fit for the role, bringing just the right dose of charisma, charm and pathos. Despite the film’s narrative shortcomings, it’s hard not to fall under its spell by the time Hawke performs a cover of The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset.
