A HONG KONG KIND OF APRIL

-

Tackling the Hong Kong Sevens and beyond

BRACE YOURSELF: YOU’RE going to need plenty of energy to handle Hong Kong in April. This month kicks off in high gear with the Hong Kong Sevens (7) (5-7 April): a threeday bacchanalia of fast-paced rugby, drinking and costumes. The revelry continues around town – head to the Fanwalk at Lee Gardens (4) in Causeway Bay for a street party vibe with live broadcasts of games, street performers, gourmet food truck snacks, dining offers and a ninja obstacle course.

But don’t party too hard: you’ve got concerts to attend. Start with seven-time Grammy winner John Mayer (8 April), who lights up the Convention and Exhibition Centre with hits including Gravity and If I Ever Get Around to Living. Head to Hong Kong Science Park for Sónar (13 April), a fusion of electronic beats by Bonobo and house maestro John Talabot, ethereal electropop from singer MØ and bass-funk grooves from Thundercat (1). Elsewhere, there’s the audio-visual extravaganza of Kraftwerk’s 3D Show (3) at Kitec (29 April), while flamehaired singer-songwriter

Ed Sheeran performs at Hong Kong Disneyland (17-18 April).

Refuel at one of the city’s newest watering holes. Tucked down an alley in Sheung Wan, effortlessly cool

Dai Bing (6) (Ping Pong’s younger sister) celebrates long drinks made with artisan ice: try the vermouth spritzer. Meanwhile, ThirtySix Bar

& Co (2) on Hollywood Road celebrates the era of the highball with art deco furnishings and classics like the Cuba Libre, which has been given a fresh twist with house-made soda water and fresh botanicals.

Now it’s time to recharge. Swing by Sheung Wan’s

Blue Lotus Gallery, where photographer Fan Ho’s shots of old Hong Kong capture the chaos and calm of the developing city (until 28 April); or Club Third (5) in Sai Ying Pun, for a showcase of street art by Syan (until 28 April) – also known as MC Yan from local hip-hop outfit LMF.
