Few filmmakers’ back catalogues are as diverse as Ang Lee’s – past credits include an adaptation of a seminal Jane Austen novel and a foray into the Marvel universe. The auteur has achieved equal levels of critical and commercial success, with 12 Academy Awards, 14 Baftas and 9 Golden Globes to date. And with the recent release of

Gemini Man, he shows no signs of slowing down.

Tying Lee’s diverse body of work together is an ambitious creativity. One of Lee’s most popular early films – 1993’s

The Wedding Banquet – won audiences with its warm, comedic approach to contempora­ry social issues surroundin­g race and sexuality. But this exploratio­n of LGBT relationsh­ips wouldn’t be Lee’s only foray; 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, which chronicled a complex relationsh­ip between two cowboys in the early 1960s, made over US$178 million internatio­nally and won Lee an Academy Award for best director.

In 1995, he took what appeared to be a step away from contempora­ry comedy, with an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibilit­y. But the film strayed from its source material and opted instead for a more modern approach, with male characters who commend rather than constrain the female protagonis­ts’ agency.

A retrospect­ive of Lee’s work would be incomplete without the seminal Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The 2000 film brought Lee’s mastery of the wuxia genre to the global stage, while three years later The Hulk saw Lee put his own spin on the action and adventure genre, in a controvers­ial film that combined the visual language of comics with that of cinema.

Last year’s Gemini Man sees a return to the award-winning experiment­al visuals Lee last employed in 2012’s Life of Pi. The 4K, 120-frame-per-second film also enlists deageing technology that allows Will Smith to confront a younger clone of himself.
