Feghouli freed for Hammers after United red rescinded

West Ham United on Wednesday successfully appealed against a threematch suspension handed to midfielder Sofiane Feghouli.

The verdict clears Feghouli to play against Manchester City in the FA Cup third round on Friday.

The Algerian was shown a red card by referee Mike Dean for a tackle on defender Phil Jones in a 2-0 Premier League loss to Manchester United on Monday.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic decried the decision as harsh at the time, saying Jones had committed the foul and vowing the Hammers would appeal.

“West Ham United can confirm that a Football Association regulatory commission has upheld the club’s claim for wrongful dismissal,” the east London club said in a statement.

“The Algerian is eligible to play against Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Friday evening and in the following Premier League fixtures with Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough.”

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho must serve a four-match suspension with immediate effect after his claim of wrongful dismissal was rejected.

The Brazilian was sent off for a reckless tackle on midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson in City’s 2-1 victory over Burnley on Monday.

The usual three-match punishment was increased because it was his second sending-off this season.

It was also his third red card in his last six appearances — the other two coming against Chelsea in the Premier League and Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League.

“His suspension includes the standard sanction of an additional game as it was his second dismissal of the season in the Premier League,” an FA statement said.
