Court upholds life sentence for fraud
Shandong High People’s Court upheld on Friday the original judgment of a highprofile fraud case that resulted in the death of a student. The court overturned an appeal by Chen Wenhui, who had been sentenced in July to life imprisonment for fraud and purchasing personal information. Six other people had been given prison terms ranging from three to 15 years. Three of them, including Chen, appealed. The fraud grabbed public attention when 18-year-old Xu Yuyu, a university candidate, died of cardiac arrest after being cheated out of 9,900 yuan ($1,500) that she needed for her college tuition.
