How does flu turn deadly?

The World Health Organization estimates that annual flu epidemics result in about 3 million to 5 million cases of severe illness globally, leading to 290,000 to 650,000 deaths. Although fever and aches may feel terrible, most of us don’t die from flu. So how exactly does this common illness cause so many deaths? While flu is most dangerous for people age 65 and older and children age 5 and younger, it can be fatal for people of all ages. However, it is likely that a complication of the infection will be the cause of a flu-related fatality. The most common complication that can lead to death is a bacterial infection of the lungs, or bacterial pneumonia. The best defense against the flu is to get vaccinated.
