China firmly supports internal reconciliation among the different Palestinian factions through dialogue as part of Beijing’s measures to promote an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, said Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The remarks made in a written interview with Al Jazeera Media Network came as it was reported that representatives of the Palestinian Fatah movement and the Islamic Resistance Movement, or Hamas, met in Beijing on Friday to discuss ending the internal division.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry didn’t confirm the news, but said China consistently supports strengthening the internal unity of Palestine.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said in the interview that China firmly supports Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations at an early date, and firmly supports establishing an independent State of Palestine and realizing “Palestinians governing Palestine”. He said the Gaza calamity shows once again that the perpetual denial of the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people is the root cause of the Palestinian question, and it is also the core issue of the Middle East question.

The only way to break the vicious cycle of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, eliminate the breeding ground of extremism and hatred, and achieve enduring peace in the region is to truly restore justice to the Palestinians, effectively enforce a two-state solution and bring about a political settlement to the legitimate security concerns of all related parties.

Unimpeded humanitarian assistance must be ensured at all times and this is a pressing moral obligation, Wang said, adding that China supports the establishment of a humanitarian relief mechanism as early as possible. China will continue to work with the international community to channel all efforts toward the ceasefire resolution enforcement, civilian protection, and sustainable delivery of humanitarian supplies, he said.
