A sumptuously illustrated catalogue of one of the world’s largest collections of Indonesian tribal art, this book promises to be a groundbreaking record of its subject. The tome features photographs of more than 400 masterpieces collected over 30 years by Bostonbased Rodger Dashow, many of which have never been published and all of which are supplemented by detailed captions giving their background and context.

Main author Bruce W Carpenter has lived in Bali for several decades since arriving as an aspiring artist, and has authored more than 20 titles on Indonesian art, history and culture. Carpenter’s main text is complemented by an introduction from Andrew Gurevich and Robert Walter, the president and chairperson of the Joseph Campbell Foundation, who delve into the continuing relevance of Campbell’s work in tribal studies in the context of these ancient — often prehistoric — representations.
