Upcoming and recent books on design, art, interiors and architecture from some of the world’s best publishers
A hefty tome not a little Brutalist in its own aspect, this work is the result of an ambitious project to catalogue the global range of Brutalist works as never before. Faithful to its label of atlas, it’s indexed by geographic region, but readers will also find a useful glossary as well as chronological and alphabetical indexes.
Each of the 878 buildings is represented by a black-and-white photograph and a short text. While the treatment is necessarily brief given the scope, the imagery is well selected and showcases each building’s defining geometry. Insightful text is supplemented with further information that includes current status, condition and usage; taken as a whole, the compendium provides a springboard for the keen researcher.
The buildings range from the expected — museums, monuments, commercial and government structures — to the less-so — residences, zoos, airports and nightclubs — while the 798 architects represent some of the modern movement’s leading lights, from Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer and Lina Bo Bardi to Peter Zumthor, David Chipperfield and Zaha Hadid. This volume is an essential addition to any library of modernist architecture.
