Workstead: Interiors of Beauty and Necessity

text by David Sokol (Rizzoli)

-

For 12 years, Brooklyn’s Workstead has forged a reputation for combining the traditional and contemporary, and for its attention to crafted detail, all of which is evidenced across the ten residential projects featured in this work. The small selection means that ample space is given to fully exploring each one, from chic Manhattan apartments to rustic country getaways.

The book aims to thoroughly illuminate the studio’s processes, with design writer David Sokol’s introduction interpolating conversations between the studio’s founders across a range of design topics. Each project is introduced with an in-depth discussion of the background and the key design drivers, which are well explicated in the imagery. There are elements we readily associate with the northeastern US, particularly in the historic properties, but these are coupled with intriguing and unexpected touches of materials and finishes, from millwork to hardware; indeed, the studio has become known for its work with local artisans on each project. A final section showcases some of Workstead’s crafted lighting pieces.
