True to the Craft
Luxury bespoke carpet producer Tai Ping embodies the spirit of artisanal craft with a combination of elaborate forms, carefully chosen fibres and sophisticated finishing techniques in each rug. It is this standard of excellence that has defined the brand since its founding in Hong Kong in 1956 by brothers Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie and an international group of friends, with the aim of preserving the craft and providing valuable employment opportunities for migrant workers.
From these humble beginnings, today Tai Ping has more than 500 in-house artisans who are able to interpret even the most complicated custom designs. Requiring meticulous skill, the hand-tufted carpets — some taking up to three months to make — reflect the highest pedigree of craft honed over years of practice.
What makes a Tai Ping carpet one of a kind is that it’s not a two-dimensional carpet, but a three-dimensional work of art — a perfect composition of smoothness and carved, sculpted or embossed elements, its varying pile heights creating a luxurious, sculptural effect.
These qualities make Tai Ping the designer’s choice, with AB Concept, André Fu, Yabu Pushelberg, Frank Gehry and Peter Marino among the names who have chosen Tai Ping rugs for some of the world’s most prestigious residences, hotels, private jets and yachts. As the brand’s journey continues, what remains unchanged is its commitment to its founding principles and values. ‘The unwavering commitment to excellence so evident at the beginning will be maintained in our design, in our craft, in our commitment to employees, society and the environment, and in our service,’ says Tai Ping CEO Mark Worgan.
