The humidity is a seemingly unwinnable beauty battle for many of us here in Hong Kong. If you’re fighting frizzy hair or simply feeling messy, it might be time to consider a specialised treatment. We asked Creative Director GLORIA FUNG from Indulgence Salon about the ins and outs of one famed hairstraightening treatment.
Tell us about keratin smoothing; how does it work?
The treatment uses a liquid keratin solution (keratin is a natural protein) to create a protective protein layer around the hair shaft that eliminates frizz and smooths the cuticle. The treatment leaves hair less frizzy and super shiny. We apply the solution to your hair and it’s then heat sealed.
Is it safe?
Yes, the chemicals are safe. You may have heard that it’s not suitable during pregnancy – that’s because hormones can impact the hair in different ways. We don’t recommend it for pregnant women because the results can really vary.
Will it damage my hair?
No. In fact, our keratin smoothing treatment could help strengthen your hair. This type of treatment shouldn’t cause breakage. It’s not like the Japanese treatment you may have heard about – the heat is only used to seal in the keratin.
Does it really work in this climate?
Yes! It works, even in Hong Kong’s humidity. From the spring months onwards, we have customers in the salon every day having this treatment done. Many of them get it done for holidays so that they can spend more time enjoying themselves and less time straightening and styling. I also see mums bring their daughters in because it makes life easier when doing their hair.
Can a keratin smoothing treatment really tame your Hong Kong frizz?
I love my curls; is this a permanent farewell to curls?
No, a keratin smoothing is not permanent and will eventually wash out of your hair. And don’t worry, you can still curl your hair. Just talk to your stylist about what you want.
How long does it last?
Anywhere from two to six months; it all depends on your lifestyle and how often you wash your hair.
How much should I budget?
The price will vary depending on the thickness and length of your hair. Like most hair treatments, thick, long hair will cost more than short hair. With that in mind, I suggest budgeting between $2,800 and $3,500 for the keratin smoothing treatment.
