Expat Living (Hong Kong)

EDITOR’S NOTE Family – it’s everything to me.

In my experience, being away from family is the hardest part about being an expat. It’s what will drive me home, eventually. I want to be united with my original tribe; I want my kids to feel that same sense of belonging and love that comes with spending physical time with your extended family. Mine is huge, and I know that makes me very lucky.

Family isn’t always who you’re related to. As expats, we create a second family from our friends. This is often tighter than our “real” family. We see all the rawness of our friends here – the highs and lows of fertility and, if we’re lucky, life with a newborn; and, the hollow and silent devastation that comes with death, and the realities we face when that knocks here or at home. We are each other’s everything while we live our expat lives.

We know right now that many families in Hong Kong, no matter where you come from, are facing some tough times. It’s important we look out for each other, no matter our politics. We sought some advice in this edition about resolving family conflict (page 59) and watching for signs that loved ones might need help (page 78). If your family, friends or neighbours need some help, reach out to the Samaritans on their 24/7 hotline: 2896 0000.

On a brighter note, here at Expat Living we are preparing for our Readers’ Choice Awards 2020. Turn to page 10 for more information about how you can get involved – not to mention the stunning resort holidays you stand the chance to win! – and be sure to keep an eye on our website and socials for more.
