KELLETT SCHOOL
HONG KONG
A FAMILY’S PERSPECTIVE Shevaun (born and raised in Hong Kong) and Alastair Leach (17 years in HK) have three children at Kellett: Clara (12), Jaimie Rose (10) and Jackson (7)
Shevaun: Al and I chose Kellett for its nurturing, inclusive environment, British curriculum and small class sizes. I went to the school myself and, in my humble opinion, there is nowhere better in HK.
Our children love Kellett for a variety of reasons: from the school musical, to the Sky Pitch to the chocolate chewy bars in the cafeteria! They all enjoy feeling part of a supportive extended family, and the overarching sense of fun and adventure.
The strong community ethos encourages parent participation, allowing you to be part of your children’s journey. The volunteer network is incredible, too; as a working mum of three, I’m so grateful for the community support.
While academics are important at Kellett, the holistic approach encourages students to explore the outside world, including social responsibility to support the wider HK community – more important than ever at this time.
A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL
Kellett School, The British International School, was established in 1976 by a group of parents and remains a parent-governed school to this day. Our not-for-profit status means that each and every dollar we charge is reinvested back into our students and our school.
What’s new?
New additions to the Senior School this year include Coding for Years 8 and 9, Innovation for Years 7 and 8, Politics as a new A-level subject, and full-time LAMDA teachers to bolster our performing arts provision.
A FAMILY’S PERSPECTIVE David Garceran Nieuwenburg (Dutch) and Jing Wang (Hong Kong) are parents of Miguel, Lower Sixth
(Year 12) and Mei Jing, Hundred (Year 11)
Malvern’s world-class facilities have certainly been a pull factor for us, and we also like how the school supports exceptional pupils through scholarships. However, what makes this school really special is the teaching staff ’s strong commitment to further each individual pupil. The House tutor system works very well for keeping track of pupils’ academic and social-emotional development. Our children’s tutor never hesitates to proactively approach us to discuss how we can fulfil our children’s potential.
Our children speak with respect and admiration of their teachers. While success is celebrated, there is still room to make mistakes, and the school is very good at handling these “learning moments”. Therefore, our children have developed the courage and resilience to go beyond what they think is comfortable.
While setting a strong academic foundation, the school goes way beyond academic rigour. There is an extensive after-school programme in place, including even specialised programmes like venturing into law. This is very demanding and offers pupils a lot more than the standard package.
A NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL
Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK) is an IB World School offering the PYP, MYP and DP curriculum to a culturally diverse pupil body. Following our launch in August 2018, primary and secondary classes now operate from Prep 1 (Y1) to Lower Sixth (Year 12). The school will see its first cohort of Upper Sixth (Year 13) students sit their final exams in 2022/23, culminating in the highly regarded IB Diploma.
Our state-of-the-art campus facilities are adjacent to the Hong Kong Science Park in the New Territories. Small class sizes give teachers the chance to engage personally and differentiate according to aptitude, skill set and need within lessons. Strong pastoral care built around an active House system, dedicated tutor-time and a genuine concern for the individual are additional key features. Strongly committed to holistic education, we offer an extensive co-curricular activities programme for pupils to build on their existing talents and to explore new activities.
Malvern seeks to develop independent, forward- thinking individuals who demonstrate strength of character and responsibility. By providing a caring, supportive and ambitious learning environment, our school enables pupils to maximise their academic potential, develop their talents and flourish as individuals. The aim is for them to become truly open-minded, global citizens capable of building consensus, respect and an ability to collaborate with those from backgrounds different to their own.
What’s new?
MCHK is member of a growing network of Malvern schools across the globe including the UK, Egypt, Qingdao, Chengdu, Hong Kong and, most recently, Switzerland. They all share the same DNA and ethos built around the “Five Centres of Excellence”, namely: British-style Pastoral Care, Enhanced Learning, Entrepreneurial Education, Outdoor and Environmental Education and a Global Network.
