‘On Course for Cure’ At The Singhealth DUKE-NUS Charity Golf 2018
More than S$413,000 raised for medical research and education
Banter and friendly competition took place both on and off the green at Singhealth DUKE-NUS Charity Golf 2018 on 24th August. About 120 golfers took part in the tournament at Sentosa Golf Club as a pledge of support for medical research and education. Among them was the Guest of Honour, Mr Lim Boon Heng, Chairman of Temasek Holdings, who teed off from the first hole of the Sentosa Golf Club’s New Tanjong Course to launch the tournament.
When a tropical downpour halted play two hours into the tournament, the camaraderie and laughter continued at the 19th hole. After a 90-minute break, the skies cleared, and the golfers headed straight back onto the course, managing to complete about 12 of the 18 holes. More supporters joined the golfers for dinner, during which an auction of donated fine wines raised almost S$22,000 for the cause, fuelled by a friendly bidding war for a 1960 bottle of Petrus.
During his welcome address, Professor Tan Ser Kiat, Chairman, Singhealth Fund and Patron, Singhealth DUKE-NUS Charity Golf Organising Committee, shared that the signature biennial golf tournament has raised a combined total of more than S$800,000 in 2016 and 2018.
The money raised at this year’s golf tournament and dinner will support medical research and education initiatives in four Academic Clinical Programmes (ACPS) under Singhealth DUKE-NUS Academic Medical Centre: Cardiovascular Sciences, Musculoskeletal Sciences, Neuroscience and Oncology. Research teams in these four clinical disciplines are searching for better ways to prevent, detect and treat some of Singapore’s top killer diseases and disabling conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, dementia and hip fractures.
Improving care for patients with these illnesses does more than save lives – it keeps families together and enables all Singaporeans to age healthily and gracefully with a sound body and mind. The next Singhealth DUKENUS Charity Golf will take place in 2020.
