Commissioner Dean Beman wanted local communities to have a greater stake in their hometown events. He also understood that tournaments relied heavily on the support of volunteers. “The tournaments had to stand for something. People weren’t going to give up their vacation to volunteer if the only purpose was for golfers to come in from out of town and leave a week later with a lot of money,” Beman said. Community charities have benefited to the tune of more than two billion dollars.
