From 1990-1996, total purses on the PGA Tour rose from $82m to $101m – about 3.4% per year. By 2008, purses totalled $292m, up 9.3% per year since Tiger joined the Tour. Around 50 cents of every dollar won on the Tour from 1997 to 2008 can be attributed to the ‘Tiger Woods effect’. It’s estimated that some $29m of Phil Mickelson’s almost $56m earnings and $36m of Vijay Singh’s $70m earnings were down to the Tiger Woods effect.
