Lowered CG For A Higher Launch
Lowered CG For A Higher Launch
Fairway woods, the hardest club to hit in the bag. You stand furthest away from the ball because of its length and it requires a precise strike to catch the ball at the lowest point of a shallow sweeping swing. You can feel the shoulders tighten up just thinking about it.
Thankfully, Taylormade’s new SIM2 Titanium, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max•d Fairways add new levels of forgiveness to help launch the ball in the air easier than ever. They draw on Taylormade’s design archives, utilising the best of its technologies that worked with golfers out in the real world. SIM2 fairways are more than just the sum of its parts.
The star here is V Steel, a design almost 20 years old now experiencing a rebirth. The raised heel and toe meant less sole area, and this improved turf interaction and created less restriction as the club moved through impact. The V Steel cut through the grass and could be played with great effectiveness from the rough or from tight lies. This sole design also kept CG low for improved launch conditions and lower spin rates.
For 2021, Taylormade focused on refining that breakthrough technology to drive centre of gravity lower to promote enhanced forgiveness and optimal launch conditions.
That’s not the only feature that kicks V Steel into a new plateau of performance. The Speed Pocket, which is filled with a thermoplastic polymer, reduces spin while also improving launch. Typically, fairway woods are contacted low on the face nearer the leading edge, and Speed Pocket detaches the leading edge of the club from the sole to create more flex for an easier and higher launch of the ball into the air.
Twistface literally turns traditional bulge and roll on its head, orienting the axis low in the heel and high in the toe, where data shows golfers are most likely to strike the ball, for more effective gear effect to bring the ball back to fairway centre.
“In the world of golf club engineering, we fight for millimetres because those small changes can lead to big results. With the SIM2 Titanium fairway, we repositioned CG a mere 12.1mm from the ground. That delivers a CG projection that’s absolute centre face along with increased MOI for more forgiveness compared to last year’s model. We’ve gone low across the entire line of 2021 fairways, so golfers can go higher.”
