PLAQUE HONOURS WOODS EPIC 2008 U.S. OPEN WIN
Tiger Woods and Torrey Pines will forever be linked by his epic win at the 2008 U.S. Open, his 14th major won on a broken leg. To honour that victory, the USGA and city of San Diego hosted a ceremony ahead of this year’s U.S. Open which included the unveiling of a plaque celebrating Woods’ stunning 12-foot putt to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate, a putt Woods punctuated with double fist-pumps and a yell. The commemorative plaque has been placed to the right and short of the 18th green, and reads: “Expect Anything Different? Playing on a fractured leg, Tiger Woods sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate. Woods defeated Mediate in 19 holes the following day to win this third U.S. Open title.”
