To honour that victory, the USGA and city of San Diego hosted a ceremony ahead of this year’s U.S. Open which included the unveiling of a plaque celebrating Woods’ stunning 12-foot putt to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate, a putt Woods punctuated with double fist-pumps and a yell. The commemorative plaque has been placed to the right and short of the 18th green, and reads: “Expect Anything Different? Playing on a fractured leg, Tiger Woods sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate. Woods defeated Mediate in 19 holes the following day to win this third U.S. Open title.”
