Taylormade P•790 Irons
Re-engineered For Intelligently Faster Performance
Re-engineered For Intelligently Faster Performance
One can forgive Taylormade for crowing that the P•790 is one of the best-selling irons in company history. That the P•790 is into its third generation says volumes, continuity of a single iron model for the brand is rarer than a winged unicorn.
In the player’s distance iron category, the P•790 is the reason why almost every manufacturer has a hollow body iron. It is performance and elegance in a single package, delivering power, distance and feel; and appeals to a wide range of players at the same time.
So how do you tackle the task of improving one of the most successful irons in recent history? Five years have passed since the P.790 first emerged, and that’s time enough for the engineers to have a look at redeveloping the technology that sits at the centre of it all.
Speedfoam Air is the all-new ultralight urethane foam inside the forged hollow body construction and is 69% less dense than the prior generation. In a world where minor adjustments can lead to major results, the switch to Speedfoam Air accounts for significant weight savings averaging 3.5g in the respective irons. That’s enough to allow for a substantial redistribution of mass to lower the CG and improve launch properties. It also unlocked access to the thinnest face in P•790 history and allowed for the creation of an intelligent sweet spot.
P•790 iron heads are crafted from an 8620 carbon steel that maintains strength and durability yet allows for a new thin-walled design, adding to the overall weight-saving benefits of Speedfoam Air. This re-engineered forged hollow body construction pairs with a responsive and thin 1.5mm forged steel L-face to promote increased flexibility, fast ball speeds and distance. All while retaining a premium forged feel at impact.
Achieving an intelligent sweet spot required that Taylormade’s iron
development team chart data from thousands of golf shots to determine the most common impact points on the iron face. Engineers then strategically shaped and positioned the sweet spot to capture more of those shots. Testing showed measurable upticks in ball speed and distance compared to the prior generation. Overall, the sweet spot has been better aligned with the face centre, providing performance where golfers need it the most.
The 2021 P•790 contains much of the DNA that has made this a dynamic iron franchise for so long. Heavy tungsten weighting up to 31g is strategically positioned within the iron head for both stability and forgiveness. The patented Thruslot Speed Pocket™ continues to provide increased face flexibility while preserving ball speed and distance on low face strikes.
Slimmer and sleeker, clean classic aesthetics complete the look of this artfully designed iron. The design update now aligns the aesthetics more with the rest of the P•700 Series, making P•790 the ideal pairing for combo sets with the P•770, P•7MC and even P•7MB in some cases.
“Speedfoam Air is the heartbeat of the new P·790 irons. The development of this lightweight urethane material allowed us to strategically reconstruct the iron head to promote optimal launch conditions and a sweet spot that covers the most common strike points on the face.” - Matt Bovee, Product Creation, Irons
