Golf Asia

THE SEASON BEGINS

- JK Tan, Editorial Consultant

t may seem like professional golf, unlike, say, the English Premier League, never ends. A week melds into another, and somewhere in the world, golfers who play the game for a living is teeing it up for prize money no matter what time of year it may be.

But February is really when the action starts in this part of the world. The Asian Tour kicks off an exciting, new ( and incredibly pack packed) 2024 with its event in Malaysia, And some of the world’s best wome women golfers will descend upon the ever-pristine Sentosa Golf Club to play in what has become a marquee event on the ladies’ calendar. The professional tours around the world is beginning to look like a swirling alphabet soup that doesn’t seem to settle. PGA Tour, L LIV, DP World Tour, LPGA, CLPGA – the list seems to go on and o on, and increasing by the month. While this presents the players wit with perhaps too many options, it leaves golf fans with many oppo opportunities to watch the world’s top players in action every given week. Sit back and enjoy the action.

But p professional golf is just one aspect of the game that seems to be growing. In Singapore, golf is as popular as ever. But the Singapore Golf Association is isn’t one to rest on its laurels.

In this iss issue, SGA President Tan Chong Huat opens up on his plans to strike when the iron is hot and continue to forge the game’s growth in a sustainabl sustainable manner. He embarks on a road that many before him has helped pa pave. Yet his approach is unlike any other. The a affable and energetic lawyer has pulled to together a team of stakeholders in Singapor Singapore to form a task force that will look at the ma many facets of golf, and begin a journey to promote, improve, and enhance the game here not only for high-performing players, but anyone and everyone who enjoys teeing it up. Whether this approach will succeed, or prove ultimately quixotic, remains to be seen. But the effort is a worthy one, and we wish him, the SGA, and the task force all the best in reaching their goals.
