The American Women's Association of Hong Kong (AWA) held Conscious Couture – A Fashion Show for Charity at the American Club, Tai Tam, on April 26, as a way of promoting a new generation of designers exploring more conscious ways of consuming and living, and encouraging their customers to be more mindful and more curious about the clothes they buy. AWA selected designers based on how each garment is made, with a focus on sustainable manufacturing processes and materials; whether the item was made with recycled fibres, natural dyes or sustainable or organic materials; whether a portion of the proceeds goes to charity or whether the manufacturing process provides a living wage for the factory workers. Strong emphasis was put on promoting local talent. The designers included Mei Ling Talibart from French Allure, whose clothes singer Jolie Chan wore to the event, Janko
Lam of Classic Anew, who creates modern interpretations of traditional Chinese clothing; Aries Sin of Modement focuses on unisex wear; Emi & Eve, whose jewellery is handcrafted by Cambodian artisans from brass bombshells, providing sustainable livelihoods and reclaiming land from mines; Sera By Raashi, whose luxury evening gowns and cocktail dresses have embroidery rendered by hand by a group of artisans in India; and Rania Hatoum Bridal, whose signature Boracay dress made from recycled pineapple leaves and spun silk uses no chemicals.
