FIVE BIG TRENDS THIS SEASON
Over tea and biscuits, LISA AIKEN, fashion director of NET-A-PORTER helped us navigate the trends and make sense of our shopping lists for this fall. Fashion is all about personal style, more than ever. Let’s have some fun.
This is the pant suit or skirt suit in a new way. Think double-breasted jacket with jeans. The 90s are back but infinitely better. The jacket shapes are boxy, straight, sharp, not broad. The fabrication is across the board – in colours or in traditional menswear tailoring patterns in various proportions and sizes.
We will be bold and colourful this autumn/winter – either in bright monochromatic or unexpected bold colour combinations. There are updated neutrals that feel completely modern. Red is a popular hue presented by the designers, in total monochromatic looks including the shoes.
Glow on. Look for sparkly 70s disco references, glossy shoes and coats, and sequined everything.
High necklines and long hemlines. We must credit Valentino, Acne, Loewe, Balenciaga, for proposing that long dresses and sleeves can look cool, feminine, and daytime appropriate. Achieve the look by wearing the long dresses with boots.
Designers are taking the need out of scouring vintage stores for that “perfect” item score that smacks of special whimsy and nostalgia. Leading the charge is Alessandro Michele at Gucci along with some gems from Prada, Marc Jacobs, and Koche.
