Thomas Ruff is known for tak­ing a crit­i­cal, con­cep­tual ap­proach to photograph­y. He ex­plores themes as di­verse as Utopi­anism, sub­ur­bia, ad­ver­tis­ing cul­ture, pornog­ra­phy and surveil­lance. Ruff stud­ied at a renowned art school, the Kun­stakademie Düs­sel­dorf in Ger­many, in the 1970s. His work is pre­sented in se­ries, each body of work mak­ing use of another new form of im­age­mak­ing tech­nol­ogy. An ex­hi­bi­tion at the Whitechape­l Gallery in Lon­don, cu­rated by gallery di­rec­tor Iwona Blazwick, is the first big ret­ro­spec­tive of Ruff's work in Lon­don, which runs un­til Jan­uary 21.
