Items: Is Fashion Modern? The Museum of Modern Art in New York last posed the question in 1944. Several decades later, it revisits the query, presenting 111 items of clothing that have had a strong impact on history and society in the 20th and 21st centuries – and that continue to hold currency today. Among them are contemporary pieces as well-known and transformative as Levi’s 501 jeans, the Breton shirt, the Casio watch and the Little Black Dress, and ones that are as ancient and culturally charged as the sari, the pearl necklace, the kippah and the keffiyeh. By treating each as a focused lens, Items considers the ways in which things are designed, manufactured and distributed, and ponders the relationships between clothing and functionality, cultural etiquette, aesthetics, politics, labour, economy and technology. The exhibition runs until January 28, 2018.
