ONE OF THE undisputed icons of the modern fashion world, Karl Lagerfeld (1933–2019) is most widely remembered as the longtime creative director of Chanel. But those in his inner circle recall a man who was at once witty and worldly, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of art and culture exemplified in the 20 residences he is believed to have designed throughout his life. Now, Sotheby’s is offering a glimpse into Lagerfeld’s world for the very first time, with sales in Monaco and Paris of 650 lots from his private collection. They include several important pieces of decorative arts.
