The Hong Kong Jockey Club marks 25 years of the HKSAR with a range of arts and culture initiatives
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR, an historic occasion that invites reflection on the city’s many outstanding achievements of the past quarter century.
Among the many highlights has been the opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, a world- class museum showcasing the best of Chinese art and culture. Constructed with the aid of a HK$ 3.5 billion donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, it is just one of many ways in which the Club has contributed to the cultural life of our city. Indeed, the Club is marking the 25th anniversary with a series of events and exhibitions for everyone to enjoy.
Currently touring across the city is the Club’s “Drago Cavallo. Travel Around Hong Kong.” exhibition. The showcase of sculptures, inspired by the ancient mythical Chinese Dragon Horse, has been created by acclaimed artist Simon Ma and local students to bring creativity and positivity to the community. Real-life dragons – or at least their ancestors – can also be found at “The Big Eight – Dinosaur Revelation” at the Hong Kong Science Museum, one of four special exhibitions under The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series. The exhibition features eight rare fossil skeletons from the golden age of the dinosaurs and has been well-received by the public. More than 500,000 visitors have attended the exhibition since July and been awed by the immersive experience.
Other exhibitions include the “The Road to the Baroque – Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum” at the Hong Kong Museum of Art until 2 November and “Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for Millennium” at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum until 21 November. Coming up is “Women and Femininity in Ancient China –Treasures from the Nanjing Museum” at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from 30 November to 27 February 2023. Meanwhile, art of a more contemporary style can be appreciated at “The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Science in Art”, which is part of the Art@Harbour project. For classical music fans the Club also sponsored two concerts by the internationally renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in October. A keen long-time supporter of sports, it also sponsored the Hong Kong Masters 2022, a gathering of top snooker players from around the world.
