DAVAO IN DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

The joy of discovering the changing landscape of the King City of the South, as new hotels and resorts rise

- Text DONG RONQUILLO

I have been to Davao many times over since I was in college and for work when I was with Unilever Philippines. I have seen how Davao has developed from what it is now. A city known for harvesting pomelo and durian that are exported around the world, Davao is also a symbol of cleanliness, orderliness, and discipline here in the country. It continues to thrive as the largest city in the Philippines and the prime city of Mindanao. Restaurants, bars, malls, and hotels have flourished over the years as the city's business and tourism industries grew.

I visit Davao at least once a year, to visit a friend, attend a birthday, or just for leisure. Flights are easy and many. And after almost two hours of flight, you will arrive at Davao’s International Airport. From my last visit, I was happy to see wonderful developments inside the city. One of them is the hotel scene. Dusit International, in partnership with Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation, has just recently launched dusitD2 Davao, the Dusit Thani Residence Davao, and Dusit Thani Lubi Plantation Resort. These three hotels are the latest hotel concepts to arrive in Davao. As a fan of Dusit Hotels for the great hospitality and for continuously redefining premium living, I’m so happy that Dusit has introduced more upscale accommodations in this bustling city.

THE DUSITD2 DAVAO AND DUSIT THANI RESIDENCE DAVAO

The dusitD2 is located only 15 minutes away from the airport and at the heart of Davao City’s emerging business district. Bong Regio designed the hotel while the interiors were made by another well-known Filipino architect, Manny Samson. The interiors highlight local culture by paying homage to its indigenous tribes. I was awed the moment I entered the hotel as the intricate ceiling instantly caught my attention. The light passes through the beautifully intertwined wooden ceiling. The lobby is a combination of Thai and Filipino architecture that seamlessly blend, creating a sophisticated look and feel.

In the middle of the hotel, a neat courtyard-style swimming pool is nicely situated. The pool is perfect for lounging to get some sun and have margaritas during happy hour with friends. The outdoor furniture is luxe and vibrant giving the courtyard a charming twist.

At the one-bedroom corner suite where I was lodged, the interiors are modern and every detail was carefully curated to achieve a sophisticated look. You can find switches, sockets and USB ports conveniently placed in the suite. The bed and beddings were comfortable and of good quality.

In the complex stands the Dusit Thani Residence Davao. It has well-appointed studios and suites owned by some affluent families of Davao that can be rented through Dusit Thani. Other units are residences that can be rented by long-term guests of the city. Each space has stunning views of the Davao Gulf and Mt. Apo.
