nature-based, community-oriented, artisanal, local, and fair-trade brands and products that seem

to offer more than just beauty. It seems these days, brands must be sustainable and intentional, and

if they can help communities and the environment in the process, well then they make it all the

more worth purchasing their product.

Now, if you are fairly new into the all-natural beauty realm, then it’s time to read on, as beauty

contributor Kelly Misa-Fernandez introduces the latest wellness beauty trends that you need to

watch out for this 2020.

BEAUTY GOES LOCAL

In the past decade, we’ve seen a rise in Philippine-made beauty brands and products. This is definitely good news for us, as locally sourced products not only help our farmers and artisans, they also create jobs that benefit our economy. Not to mention, we make a more sustainable choice

by buying local, as there is no need to consider importation costs (something we don’t really think

about when we shop for skincare). Personally, it makes me proud to support products that are made in our country, especially when they can go head to head with well-known international brands. This is no doubt

a growing trend that we will hopefully see more of in the coming years. Brands to watch include Pili Ani, One Earth Organics, Happy Skin, Always Sunday,

and VMV Hypoallergenics.

LYMPHATIC HEALTH GOES MAINSTREAM

While most of us can’t seem to make the connection between the lymphatic system and beauty, as of late it has become wildly popular. Thanks in part to the jade roller, the trampoline, and countless treatments and massages that focus solely on the drainage of this system. The lymphatic system works by helping the body get rid of toxins, waste, and other unwanted materials. This has a direct effect on our health and beauty, as it improves our overall immunity and enhances the quality of our skin to offer a fresher and more youthful glow. It also helps reduce puffiness, as well as redness and sensitive skin. The best ways to drain the lymphatic system include getting a Lymphatic Detox at The Spa, a 90-minute massage that cleanses from within. Also, get yourself a jade roller or better yet an obsidian roller (to improve your mental well-being and increase confidence) from

Cat Arambulo Studio (@shopCATArambulo).

SUSTAINABILITY BECOMES A NORM FOR

BRANDS

We’ve come to a time when consumers are quickly becoming hyper

aware of the effects of our buying habits. And admittedly, sustainability and conscientiousness are now top of mind shopping. It’s about time, given the environmental situation

we are in. Sustainable manufacturers, sustainable packaging—these are now growing in popularity among brands, so consumers expect

more from their favorite products. It not only has to be effective, but it also has to have a story, an advocacy, and more importantly, it has to be sustainable. Recently,

Unilever has announced it will make their products reusable and refillable by the end of the year, which is amazing news. This means less packaging and plastic bottles will end up in the landfill, and it helps us, as responsible consumers, do

our part.

MENTAL HEALTH BECOMES TOP PRIORITY

More than ever before, mental health has taken center stage and is slowly but surely being normalized and talked about. It turns out, more than a few of us experience social anxiety and digital stress, which may eventually lead to bigger issues if ignored or left untreated. It was always taboo to talk about these things, but finally, we are realizing that a healthy mind is key to looking and feeling beautiful, and there are now many ways to address this issue. It is as simple as taking yoga classes, making daily positive selfaffirmations, and taking a few minutes in a day to do meditation.

AYURVEDA IS GETTING A FAN

BASE

Although Ayurveda has been around for thousands of years in India, it is only now that we are truly getting to

know its powers. The idea is within the interconnectedness of all things—that treating

the whole person leads to greater balance and well-being, we consider the effects of our products not only on hair or skin, but on the body, mind, and emotion. Brands like Aveda use the power of wellness to promote a balance in mind, body, and spirit, the prerequisite to

achieving one’s beauty goals.

UNPLUGGING FROM THE DIGITAL WORLD IS NOW A FORM OF WELLNESS

As we are finding out, there is such a thing as digital clutter, and it can take over our lives and make us feel stressed and anxious. These days, influencers have been known to take long breaks or a digital detox, if you will, and usually come out refreshed and renewed after days or weeks without their phones or access to the Internet. Taking time off from the digital world has become a luxury, which is why we must remember to disconnect once in a while, or as we do with work, put ourselves on a fixed schedule when it comes to using our phones, desktop computers, laptops, and pretty much any digital device.

UNLOCKING THE POWER OF AROMATHERAPY

Using aromatherapy as a form of alternative medicine isn’t new, but it is definitely growing in popularity. It is a holistic healing treatment that uses plant extracts to promote health and well-being. And lately, it has been used for the purpose of beautifying. There are establishments like The Spa that offer aromatherapy massages like Aroma Facial Massage that is known to effectively reduce lines and facial tension. In the process, it also boosts circulation, encourages toxin elimination, and even cell renewal.

SIMPLIFYING BEAUTY RITUALS IS KEY

Admittedly, our growing arsenal of beauty products can lead to an extensive nightly routine that can be time-consuming, and for the most part, unnecessary. It has been proven that slathering on too many products can be counterproductive. And while it usually won't cause a reaction (unless you’re doing a chemical peel at home), you might not get the desired result you want in the long run.

The recommended steps for a nightly skincare ritual is: cleanse, tone, apply serum, and moisturize. Anything more than this would be considered

excessive.
