WHAT IS PRIDE?

-

June is undoubtedly one of MEGA’s most highly anticipated issues, and it is something we do with pride. While this year’s headliners are obviously accomplished individuals making a mark in their respective fields, what struck us most are not only their achievements, but how they are using their status to influence and promote advocacies that are close to their hearts. Naturally, this means that they are extremely busy—thus allotting time in their schedules to accommodate us with a shoot proved to be quite challenging. But as fate would have it, the stars fortuitously aligned, and off we quietly went to New York, the city that never sleeps, perhaps just like we did.

Miss Universe Catriona Gray started modeling at a young age, and she has graced the fashion and beauty pages of MEGA countless times. MEGA not only believed in her as a model, but supported her musical passion as well. Right off the bat, we knew that there was something quite special about her, and it was only a matter of time before the world, or well, the universe would take notice. The reigning Miss Universe is undoubtedly multifaceted and talented, as well as a true believer of helping the less fortunate. A staunch supporter of Young Focus Philippines and Love Yourself Philippines, advocacies in which she strongly believes in, Catriona Gray constantly underscores that education or awareness is the way to help young underprivileged Filipinos lead a better life.

Full disclosure: Catriona had only six hours to shoot with the MEGA team. But we were able to shoot the cover and cover story, do an interview, as well as shoot a video around

New York. Pulling this near-impossible feat off became a reality because Catriona is in every sense of the word, a consumate professional—focused, zero complaints, and always ready with a smile. Breathtaking beauty, quick wit, and undeniable charm aside, she is truly a real force to be reckoned with.

Our second subject, represents the ever dynamic voice of the LGBTQ+ community, and it is truly an honor to be able to work with this individual. I am referring to none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race alum and (double) All-Star, Karl Westerberg, more popularly known as Manila Luzon. Meeting her was quite the experience, and there is truly a presence about her. Like the few before her, she has helped paved the way for drag dressing in pop culture, making it mainstream. I especially love the fact that she believes that is a serious business, a job that entails a lot of hard work, passion, and sacrifices, but that the rewards are truly great. Read about her journey and how she plans to use her strengthened popularity and platform to spread awareness about the plight and passions of the community she calls family.

Happy pride everybody!
