RETRO SUPER FUTURE

-

In the world of fashion, so much has happened—case in point, the rise and fall of brands and designers alike. The situation is akin to entering fashion school and not feeling special just because you’ve studied Christian Dior is, or the ability to identify Maison Margiela archival pieces before he became elusive, or being able to quote every single thing Gabrielle Chanel has ever said.

Beneath the glitzy trappings is the cutthroat industry otherwise known as fashion. Consider the following: Instagram’s Diet Prada’s call-out culture; Zac Posen closing his eponymous label despite Project Runway, Netflix’s House of Z and A-listers wearing his creations for almost 20 years; Rihanna’s Savage lingerie line indirectly murdering Victoria’s Secret for good; Michael Kors acquiring Versace; Kim Kardashian inappropriately naming her shapewear line. Dozens of unfortunate events dominated the rest of 2019, all thanks to the rise of cancel culture. But not all is lost. Alber Elbaz bounced back after leaving Lanvin in 2015, Pierpaolo Piccoli continuous to lead the new breed of couturiers at Valentino all while preserving his legacy, and notable streetwear designers taking the helm of huge luxury fashion houses—forever shifting the tides of the market. Sounds overwhelming but it’s a pretty fast year that flew by and we’re sure 2020 has more surprises in store for the rest of us.
