DANILO HESS

-

INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER

Known for its signature turquoise sky, the work of Danilo Hess’ has appeared on the covers of magazines worldwide. “I think that comes from all those vacations in Bacolod and Boracay,” muses the Filipino-German. “I was programmed to have an appreciation for nature.”

The New York-based photographer is originally from Colombia, Missouri, born to a German chemist father and a Filipina mother who practiced nursing. He credits his work ethic being influenced by this mixed household. “The German side gave me the precision and Filipino side, a creative, fun-loving attitude. It became a good balance of being a scientist and being an artist.” He goes on to describe his demeanor on set. “I try to be as nice and chill as possible, because I know very well how the energy I bring in affects everyone in the team. I try to keep things fun and hopefully, that comes out as great photos in the end.” He admits though that for Filipinos, or anyone, to be known in the fashion industry, a posting in London, Paris or New York is almost a requirement. Hess has lived in New York for 15 years.

Adjusting to the Big Apple came naturally for the young Hess. “I immediately met people from different countries, that’s what made me fall in love with NYC, that you can learn from people’s cultures.”

Still, he confesses that The Philippines holds a special place in his heart.

“I miss the easy access to paradise. I still have this vivid memory of Boracay from 1998, I just walked out into the water, it was low tide and there was a sandbar in the middle. I just sat there, alone, in silence and peace, and it was so beautiful.” Hess also recalls hikes to Mt. Pinatubo, road trips to Tagaytay and sitting at his parents’ home in Iloilo.

Asked to describe what about Filipinos he would like to represent to the world, his answer is: “Creativity.”—RT
