I like beautiful places with good service. A savvy concierge for me is a must. Taj Lake Palace in India, Birkenhead House in South Africa or even Siam Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
There have been many unique trips for me. Maybe the best was the time when my family and I were privately sailing for 10 days on a superyacht from Istanbul to Greece, and stopping wherever or whenever we wanted on different islands with a crew of 15. The experience of sunsets and islands like Santorini was just great.
Eating raw prawn covered with raw wood ants at Noma in Tokyo is probably one of my most memorable dishes. That or drinking fresh turtle blood mixed with cold sake, also in Tokyo!
I enjoy a very chilled Vesper Martini, at Sevva or the Chinnery Bar in Hong Kong.
Salt is an underrated ingredient in cakes. It wakes up flavours and plays a crucial role in the art and science of baking.
I love New York for shopping; it has so much variety from uptown to downtown stores. It’s too difficult to pinpoint just one destination. To stay, I’m an uptown gal, but to shop, I go all over and all the way to Brooklyn. Some of my favourite stores remain, like Bergdorf Goodman, Norma Kamali and ABC Home. In New York I meet up with my dear friends like Vera Wang, Rebecca Moses, Pascal Dangin, Iris Apfel and Vivienne Tam and they may bring me to vintage antique markets for a real shopping treat.
On a smaller scale, yet always with very good curated art, are The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and The Leeum Museum in Seoul, in which I find the selection is impeccably chosen.
My last great spa experience was at Beverly Wilshire spa in Los Angeles. I had the top masseuse, who’s the favourite of top movie stars in Hollywood, for three hours. He was awesome! London is great too, for top calibre masseuses trained by Micheline Arcier. They use the best essential oils ever.
Try this: A little Epsom salt on your palm with Eve Lom’s cleansing cream. Rub gently all over the face and rinse. Then follow with Dr Hauschka’s hydrating moisturising mask and see the difference.
I have been practising alternative and holistic medicine with my German doctor for as long as I know, and reading The Gerson Therapy [ by Charlotte Gerson] confirmed that this surely is the way to go. Living in Hong Kong, especially with so much hurry and stress, I find it a most interesting read.
