AZORES

-

We directed you to the mid-Atlantic Ridge a couple of issues ago, but this month we’re suggesting you head further north in that ocean to the far-flung Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Volcanic in nature and green, rugged and otherworldly in appearance, these nine islands lie some two-and-a-half hours’ flying time from Lisbon. You’ll arrive at the busy – by Azorean standards – city of Ponta Delgada, on the island of Saõ Miguel, from where it’s easy to escape into this subtropical paradise: the stunning caldera of Sete Cidades is part of the municipality and just 30 minutes’ drive away. Take a ferry to Terceiro and the old town of Angra do Heroísmo, get stuck into the vinhos from vineyards on the island of Pico (both are Unesco World Heritage sites), lose yourself in unspoilt nature reserves, throw yourself into all manner of outdoor activities, dine on superb seafood, local beef and cheese, and simply bask in the peace and uniqueness of this remote oceanic outpost.
