LA COLOMBE D’OR, ST-PAUL-DE-VENCE
Hidden away in the hills above Nice is one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, St-Paul-de-Vence. And nestled in that town is the charming family-run hotel and restaurant La Colombe d’Or. It may not sound extraordinary at first, but a peek at the incredible pieces that line the rooms will make any art lover look twice. A Picasso hangs in the dining room, there’s a Matisse in the hallway, an Alexander Calder mobile by the pool, and more. Originally opened as a café-bar in 1920, La Colombe d’Or quickly became a meeting place for European artists, who gave their works in lieu of payment for meals and board. The result? A museumworthy collection of art. We’re big fans of the Fernand Legér ceramic mural out on the terrace, as well as the gilded modern masters hung on the walls inside.
