Minute Man
Is it performance? Is it a sculpture? Is it even art? Erwin Wurm debuted his
decades ago, and the concept continues to captivate. The framework includes a set of instructions and a smattering of everyday objects, and the Austrian artist invites members of the audience to pose with them in strange or absurd scenarios he has described, to create installations that last no more than a minute and which question the boundaries and definition of the sculpture format. Music fans might recall Red Hot Chili Peppers’ music video, in which band members execute a number of random acts inspired by the piece, with credit given to the artist in the final frame. The public has a chance to join in the fun (though beneath this playful concept, Wurm seeks to critique modern society and its habits, particularly relating to capitalism and materialism) at Art Basel in Hong Kong, in a joint presentation by three of his galleries: Lehmann Maupin, Thaddaeus Ropac
Gallery and König Galerie.
