IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME
Versace plays pop antiquity for autumn/winter 2018, releasing a new limited-edition bag that’s sure to adorn every fashionista’s arm this season
THE VERSACE POP Magna Grecia Palazzo Empire bag – say it three times fast. This is a big bag, with a big name, that needs a big introduction. History has shown that good things can come from odd pairings – like that of Andy Warhol and communism – so why not a bombastic, limitededition purse where pop art and the Greece of classical antiquity are smashed together? We’re in a world where more is more, so push those classic black holdalls to the back of the closet and embrace this new extravagant maxi life. This pop version of the Palazzo bag comes in three colourways, each louder than the next, and puts the Magna (meaning “great”) in Grecia (meaning “Greece”). There’s everybody’s (and Versace’s) favourite mythical lady, Medusa, alongside Greek vases and statues from Gianni Versace’s palazzo that lend classical elements to this otherwise pop-art fantasy. Donatella didn’t hesitate when she gave the Palazzo bag a contemporary makeover, with ancient icons. It’s a brand-new face and a never-before-seen personality. This is not a bag for the faint-hearted, but when were lovers of fashion ever timid?
