SECRETS OF SUITE 67
A PEEK INSIDE BELMOND LA RESIDENCIA’S FLAMBOYANTLY LUXURIOUS BOLTHOLE, DESIGNED BY MATTHEW WILLIAMSON
British fashion designer Matthew Williamson is known for his flamboyant tastes and predilection for clashing colours and brazen prints, a look that easily falls in and out of favour. It’s one that wouldn’t seem to fit in at the elegant and understated La Residencia hotel – until, that is, you open the unassuming wooden door that leads to Suite 67. The suite, which took around a year to renovate, feels like a private house complete with several terraces, a pool and an outdoor living space at the entrance. With its hand-painted floor tiles and a kaleidoscope of colours it’s an Instagrammer’s dream. Indeed, Williamson has worked his magic in every nook and cranny, personally selecting every item in the one-bedroom suite. Locally sourced pieces from Mallorca are mixed with vintage flea-market finds and Williamson creations that include a vibrant pink lamp made from ostrich feathers, as well as textiles and wallpaper from his own collection. He’s even added his own touch to the hotel’s traditional Mallorcan bed by painting its spiralling posts a bright Yves Klein blue. Likewise in the adjoining candy-coloured lounge the walls are covered in framed botanical and avian art, rainbow-hued rugs are thrown across terracotta tiles and there are animalprint pillows and floral-print armchairs. Every day I discover something new. My favourites, however, are the rustic his-and-her wardrobes painted with floral bouquets and lined with stunning wallpapers designed by Williamson himself.
