Followers of up-to-the-minute fashion news will know the real star of Louis Vuitton’s 2019 resort show didn’t take to the catwalk with Nicholas Ghesquière. Seated in the audience at Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence was Grace Coddington, the fashion editor and illustrator, clad in a pair of silk pyjamas emblazoned with the classic Vuitton monogram interspersed with sketches of her cats and Ghesquière’s dog, the bright orange logos a perfect match for her signature cloud of hair. A number of her items were also in the show – kitschy cat-shaped clutches and more pets tumbling across monogrammed leather – alongside the more understated clothing, shoes and accessories by house maestro Ghesquière, who presented almost 60 looks, each one more stunning than the next. There was structure and flow, there were feathers and shoulder pads, there were elements that should have been contradictions that weren’t – heavy black leather overthe-knee boots (an evolution of last season’s Archlight sneaker) styled with sheer embroidered cover-ups and wispy satin dresses, or short shorts that still read elegant. Outerwear was a high point, whether it was in shiny oversize jackets rife with thoughtful details or ingeniously cut vests for layering in unthought-of ways. Prestige travelled to the South of France to shoot the collection just days after the runway show – enjoy our exclusive shoot of some of our favourite looks.
